Hardware hacking is new frontier for people who like to tinker with stuff. While free software has very strict definition what makes it open, in hardware is somewhat more difficult to get started designing boards if you are beginner. However, having cheap hardware produced in China available makes it possible to take existing boards (most of them based on projects which are themselves open source) and improve software side of it to provide new features. I hope this will enable more people to get their first hands-on experience with flashing your own software on existing hardware and provide motivation to learn more and create new projects.
